Final Reflection

The digital world is becoming more complicated as we add new technologies and apps to our daily lives. Digital expectancy is going to be one of the major driver that will change the teaching and learning environments (Howell, 2012). Text books will be eBooks, communication will be done via emails, eNewsletters and class websites, laptops and IPads are already in classrooms, ePortfolios will become a way for students to do and submit assignments (Howell, 2012). With all this current technology and new technology being injected into our schools, teachers are expected to keep up and adapt to these ever changing and challenging technologies. Students no longer learn well when they are just talked at, they like to have a say in how they are learning and what tools they are using to learn, they like to be able to collaborate alongside the teacher and not be dictated to (Prensky, 2008).

Voice Thread was used for my oral summary and Powtoon was used for my visual summary. While completing this assignment and using these two programs as well as developing a blog for the very first time, it was easy to see how these tools could be used as another form of assessment in schools. Not only does it allow the student to be more creative with how they respond to the assessments but it will also build on their skills and knowledge of using technologies. I know it definitely added to my skills as I had to develop new ones, such as embedding links and using a program to record my voice. Using digital technologies and online programs is opening up a new world on how students are assessed and what they can actually do. Giving presentations and oral speeches will no longer involve a student standing all alone out the front with cue cards, the student will be backed up by their presentation created using different technologies.
